How to Remove Makeup

Image

Most of us are well aware of how to apply cosmetics, but do you know how to take off cosmetics properly? If not, don't worry! We are here to help.

Here, we will discuss the best ways to take off all types of cosmetics and cover tips on avoiding skin irritation and acne breakouts.

How To Remove Different Types Of Makeup

Not all cosmetics are created equal; therefore, it doesn't all come off the same way. Here's a breakdown of how to take off different types of cosmetics:

Foundation

Start by using a brush or sponge to apply a small amount of cleanser to your face. Gently blend the cleanser into your skin in circular motions until all traces are removed. It’s also a good idea to apply moisturizer after you have removed your cosmetics.

Remember, applying foundation  usually involves some of the neck area too, so ensure you include this area in the removal process.

Concealer

This can be removed in a similar way to foundation.  Use a cotton cloth pad soaked in micellar water or another gentle cleansing solution and gently wipe the pad all over your face until the concealer is gone.  In addition, your cheeks will benefit from a soothing blend of moisturizer after your removal routine.

Blush

You can usually remove this product at the same time as you are removing the underlying layers - such as foundations and primer - using a clean wet cotton sponge and micellar water or another gentle cleanser. Gently wipe the pad all over your cheeks until the blush is removed.

Eyeshadow

You can either use an eyeshadow brush to apply a small amount of cleanser directly to your eyelids then wipe clean, however this is not ideal as the eyes are so sensitive to beauty products.  While the eyelids may require a little more intensive attention, eyeshadow can generally be removed while performing your complete removal routine.  Specialized remover wipes can also be used as long as they are recommended for the eye area.

Eyeliner

While there are specialized products to remove eyeliner, it’s best to use pure micellar water and a small sponge because of the proximity to the eye.  Eyes are not fans of skincare products!  Gently wipe the pad along your natural lash line until the eyeliner is removed.

Mascara

Use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes as this will help the product come off more easily. Once again because of the proximity to the eye, removing mascara is something that needs to be undertaken carefully. Wet a cotton pad and gently wipe the pad along your lash line until all traces are removed.

There are also specialized products that are designed to be used around the eye area, and these could be beneficial for getting waterproof mascara removed.

The Importance Of Removing Your Cosmetics

Here’s why it’s important to remove all traces of cosmetics before going to bed:

  • It can clog your skin pores: Sleeping with cosmetics on can clog your pores and lead to breakouts.
  • Cosmetics can irritate your skin: If you have sensitive skin, sleeping with cosmetics on can irritate and inflame your skin. This can lead to redness, dryness, and breakouts.
  • Natural cleansing cannot be achieved: Leaving cosmetics on while you sleep means that you're not getting the full benefits of your skincare routine. Your cleansing, toning, and moisturizing products can't do their job properly if they're competing with all the products in your makeup bag.
  • Can cause premature aging: Leaving your cosmetics on overnight can also cause premature aging. When you wear cosmetics, you are essentially trapping all the dirt and grime from the day against your skin. This can lead to wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging.

So, to keep your skin looking its best, take off your cosmetics every night before bed - it only takes a few seconds to save all those problems.
