How to Apply Makeup Highlighter

Image

This little piece of magic is one of the most popular products in every woman's makeup kit. It accentuates facial features and gives the face a natural, dewy look.

Here is a guide on choosing the best one for your skin type and applying it for maximum effect.

What is it?

This is a makeup product that accentuates facial features and gives the face a natural, dewy look. Some of the facial features you would apply it to are obvious, but others you may not have thought of, such as the bridge of your nose.  It comes in various forms, but the most common type is powder.

It usually contains shimmery or glittery particles that reflect light, which helps to brighten and open up the face.

Choosing the Best Product for Your Skin Type

Start with identifying your skin type. This will dictate which product will be best for your skin.

For dry skin

Choose one that contains moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid and are creamy or have a dewy finish. Avoid powdery ingredients, as they will further dry your skin.

For oily skin

Choose an oil-free product. Look for one with a matte or satin finish. Avoid those containing shimmery or glittery particles, as they will only make your skin look oily.

For normal skin

What you choose will depend on your preferences. If you want a dewy finish, choose a cream-based product, and a powder-based product will give a matte finish. Avoid shimmery or glittery particles, as they can look too shiny on normal skin.

Your Eyes, Lips, and Chin

Here are the basic steps for applying:

  1. Inner corners of your eyes: The innermost part of your eyes is where light naturally hits first, so this is an ideal spot. To apply, use a small fluffy applicator to place a shimmery white or champagne-hued shadow in the innermost corners of your eyes, which will help open up and brighten your entire eye area.
  2. Brow bones: Just above your brows is another great place. Use along your brow bones, blending it towards your temples. This will help lift your brows and make your eyes appear more open.
  3. Add a dab just above your upper lip: This may seem like an odd application, but just above your upper lip will give the illusion of fuller lips. To do this, use your finger to blend a tiny bit of highlighter to the center of your Cupid's bow.
  4. Center of your chin: This will help lift your entire face and make you look more awake. Use a small applicator or brush to apply over your chin.

Your Cheeks, Nose, and Forehead

  • Try applying foundation and concealer first:  Start with a cleansed face and using an applicator or your finger, blend your foundation and concealer first. This will help ensure that your application is even and doesn't look cakey.
  • Tops of your cheekbones: One of the most popular places to apply is along the tops of your cheekbones, for that blushed look. This will give you a natural-looking glow and help to accentuate your cheeks. To do this, use a small beauty applicator, a brush, or a damp beauty sponge to tap on a cream product along the tops of your cheekbones. To complete the dewy look, add a touch of blush to your cheeks.
  • Tip of your nose: This will help to create the illusion of a slimmer nose. Start by using your finger to dab on a small amount to the very tip of your nose upwards to the bridge of your nose.
  • Forehead: For a natural-looking blush, try sweeping some highlighter down your forehead. This will help to brighten up your entire face and give you healthy-looking skin. Use a small amount over the center of your forehead, finishing at the bridge of your nose.

Conclusion

While it’s not considered a foundation of your makeup application, it certainly adds the icing to the cake!

They can be a great way to add some extra oomph to your makeup look, but it’s important to use them correctly in order to avoid looking overdone or like you have glitter all over your face.

For a natural-looking glow, we hope this guide will help you take your makeup game up a notch!
