It can be difficult to remove all your makeup at the end of the day, especially if you don't have any makeup wipes on hand. But these products are relatively new, so naturally there must be ways to perform the task without the trusty wipe.

Even though they only entered the market in the past few years, they've quickly become a drugstore staple. Chances are, you've used them yourself, however what if you don't have any makeup wipes on hand? Is there another way to perform the task without using these trusty products?

Can You Remove Makeup Without Wipes?

Absolutely! There are many other ways and some might even be better for your skin.

You might like to avoid their use if you are:

  • Trying to be more sustainable
  • Trying to save money
  • Traveling
  • Looking for a more natural option

It's also important to note that the methods we are going to share may not be as convenient. Let’s look at some other methods.

Our Favorite Methods

1. Facial wash: Just wet your face, add a small amount of facial wash, and gently massage it into your skin. Rinse thoroughly, and you're good to go!

2. Use a cotton ball or pad: Soak your cotton ball or cotton pad in water and gently swipe it across your face.

3. Use olive oil: Another way is by utilizing olive oil. Pour a little olive oil onto your fingers and then massage it into your skin.

4. Use baby oil: Similar to other oils,  Just pour a little bit onto your fingers and massage it into your skin.

5. Use coconut oil: Ideally, use an organic, cold-pressed coconut oil as a natural alternative.  This particular type of coconut oil is less likely to clog your pores. Just pour a small amount onto your fingertips and massage it into your skin.

6. Makeup eraser: If you're looking for an environmentally-friendly natural alternative, consider utilizing a makeup eraser cloth. These clothes are made from natural materials like bamboo and can be used to remove almost any type of cosmetic.

7. Facial brush: A final option is to use a facial brush with cleanser. This can be done either with a cleansing or exfoliating brush. Add some facial cleanser to the brush, wet your face, and apply ensuring a good rinse afterwards.

Is it Better to Use Alternatives?

There is no definitive answer to this question - it depends on your preferences and what works best for you as a cleanser.

Some people find that wipes are the quickest and most convenient way. However, others prefer to use different methods because they are gentler on the skin.

If you are trying to be more sustainable, it is better to utilize alternatives. However, if you are looking for a more natural option, there are many ways to do it without using harsh chemicals or artificial ingredients, with a process as simple as micellar water and a clean cloth.

Advantages of Wipes

  • They are quick and easy to use: Simply swipe it across your face, and your cleansing is complete.
  • They are easy to pack and take with you on the go: These removers are perfect for travel based on the fact that they don't take up much space and are easy to throw in your bag.
  • They can be used to remove all types of cosmetics: From waterproof mascara to long-wearing foundation, they can handle most cosmetic products.
  • They are usually gentle on the skin: Many are made with ingredients designed to be gentle on the skin, so they won't irritate.

Disadvantages of Wipes

  • They're not environmentally friendly: These removers are based on non-biodegradable materials, which means they're not good for the environment. They can take centuries to decompose, and during that time, they'll release harmful chemicals upon disposal.
  • They're not good for your skin: They can be harsh, especially if you have sensitive skin, and can cause irritation, redness, and even breakouts. In addition, you need to take care when it comes to your waterproof mascara because of the sensitive and delicate eye area.
  • They're not sustainable: If you use them daily, you'll go through them quickly so you'll end up spending more money in the long run, and generate a lot of waste.

Conclusion

While wipes may be considered the cream of the crop for removing makeup, it can be achieved using other very simple methods.  For example, a hot cloth to help loosen the debris and then a rinse with micellar water.  In addition, there are more elaborate processes, such as proprietary removers designed specifically for the removal of cosmetic creams, powders, and liquids.

Be sure to rinse your face afterward with cold or micellar water to help close your pores. You may also want to treat your skin with an appropriate creamy moisturizer, or any moisturizer that is specifically based on your skin type. After cleansing, this can help to prevent dryness and irritation.
